Here’s a photo that appeared on the front page of the March 14 1934 edition of the Toronto Daily Star:


Ms. Crawford, who was from Chicago, did indeed marry the 20th Earl of Suffolk. The Earl had a short but heroic life: during the Second World War, he rescued the world’s entire supply of heavy water from France before it fell, and then worked as a bomb defuser in London. He successfully defused 34 bombs before his luck ran out on May 12 1941.
